Music at City Hall

January 14, 2009 by Martin Hoscik

Back from City Hall where I’ve witnessed Boris presenting a selection of the instruments donated under his music amnesty to representatives from schools in Lambeth.

In addition to one of Boris’s funnier speeches we were treated to music performances by Julian Lloyd Webber and children from the In Harmony music initiative he chairs. Apparently some of the kids had only been playing instruments for a few weeks which made the performance even more impressive.

On the way out I heard one miserly attendee describe the event as “something more fitting a local Town Hall” but the general mood was that Boris had picked a genuinely worthy cause to champion.

Giving away free instruments (some of which came from TfL’s lost property stores!) probably wasn’t in the minds of MPs as they debated the GLA act but if this initiative produces even one talented musician and one less dreamer determined to waste their life auditioning for reality TV it’ll be a more deserving legacy than removing the bendy part from buses.
