Ken Livingstone has published figures suggesting that Londoners need to earn £7.20 an hour to avoid falling into poverty, significantly higher than the national minimum wage of £5.35 for adults.
This year the Mayor’s campaign for higher pay in the capital has been given a boost by KPMG. Speaking today Ian Tew, Head of Workplace at the company, said they had “found that paying the Living Wage is a smart business move as increasing wages has reduced staff turnover.”
With the cost of living in the capital far higher than in the rest of the UK it’s plainly wrong that the national minimum wage doesn’t reflect this.
The Living Wage Campaign works to ensure employees in London receive the near-mythical ‘fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work’.
