Enjoying The Thames

September 16, 2007 - Martin Hoscik@MayorWatch

Yesterday’s opening day of the two-day Thames Festival was a delightful demonstration of London at its best.

Under a beautiful sunny sky crowds of thousands flocked to the Southbank to enjoy free entertainment including music and dance and munch on foods from the capital’s diverse communities.

Everything from roasted hog to foods from the Caribbean could be enjoyed and then washed down with a freshly made smoothy or an ice cold beer in a fun, friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

The Feast on the Bridge was so popular that at one stage the stewards had to suspend access to Southwark Bridge because the crowds were so large.

Teams of friendly festival staff were on-hand along the whole of the route, always eager to help out with directions or information and interspersed amongst the attractions were teams from the event sponsors Barclaycard who were advertising their new Oyster capable card.

It’s always great to be able to take the time enjoy and appreciate our city and everyone responsible for making the festival so much fun deserves a hearty ‘thank you’.

If you missed yesterday’s fun the event continues today from midday with attractions including traditional rowing. The fun will be rounded off with a fireworks display this evening.
