Boris announces electric cycle hire scheme

Residents in Muswell Hill are to gain a new transport option after Mayor Boris Johnson announced plans to trial an electric cycle hire scheme in the area.

The e-bike trial will be separate but similar to the capital’s existing cycle hire scheme.

Unlike conventional bikes, electric cycles include a battery-powered motor which helps the rider pedal. City Hall says this will make the scheme more accessible to people who are older or less fit.

Haringey was selected for the trial because of its hilly areas in the borough and the potential to link e-bikes with existing local bus services.

The trial is being funded by Transport for London although private sponsorship will also be sought.

Under the terms of its contract for the main cycle hire scheme, Barclays bank will have first refusal on any naming or sponsorship opportunities.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, said: “E-bikes are already big on the continent because they take the puff and pant out of cycling.

“Once again, London is leading the way in Britain with new cycling innovations and the elevated latitudes of Haringey are perfect for this trial.”

Haringey Council Leader, Claire Kober, said: “This project with the Mayor of London underpins our commitment to being one of the capital’s greenest boroughs and to promoting and rewarding greener travel through improved cycling facilities and sustainable transport across Haringey.

“Together, we can encourage more people to leave their cars at home and offer the next generation of cyclists safer and better routes around our borough.”
