Wandsworth Council says City Hall should gain strategic oversight of Clapham Junction railway station in order to ensure the station best serves the capital.
The station, the UK’s busiest rail interchange, is currently managed by Network Rail and the train operating companies.
However the council says it is “much too important to London for it not to fall within the powers of the Mayor.”
It has also repeated calls for Clapham Junction to be linked to the Tube via Crossrail 2 or an extension of the Northern Line and for the station to be equipped for longer trains, a measure which would tackle the current overcrowding experienced by commuters.
The proposals are included in Wandsworth’s submission to Mayor Boris Johnson ‘2020 Vision’ initiative which seeks to draw up a long term vision for the capital’s development.
Other proposals include creating a direct rail link to Heathrow which would run from Waterloo Station via Vauxhall and Clapham Junction.
