Work to replace the lighting system in the Trafalgar Square fountains with an energy efficient LED system has been completed in time for the Square’s participation in the Story of London festival, which starts Monday and continues throughout June.
The work, which was first announced last July and started in March, also included renovation of metalwork, and conservation work to the merman, dolphins and tritons figures and remedial work to the stonework.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said the work “brings together the old and the new in a way that London does so well and 60 years since work began on the present layout, it is a brilliant way to help kick off the Story of London festival – which is about celebrating the capital’s past, present and future.”
The new lighting system will cut the carbon footprint of the fountain lighting by up to 90 per cent leading to a saving 16,400 kg of carbon every year as well as saving thousands of pounds on energy bills.
