The extension would create a spur from Kennington serving new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea.
Construction of the extension is subject to TfL and Lambeth and Wandsworth councils putting together a funding package which would include contributions from developers such as the owners of Battersea Power Station.
The building’s former owners were placed into administration last November just days after Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Chancellor George Osborne visited the site.
Johnson subsequently claimed he had “the Government’s full support” for the redevelopment, however despite the Mayor’s boast no Government money has been offered for the project.
The Government’s support is limited to allowing TfL and the Mayor to borrow against future Community Infrastructure Levy receipts.
Earlier this month administrators named Malaysia based SP Setia and Sime Darby as the preferred bidders for the power station.
TfL says it is “looking forward to working with them on the Northern Line extension.”
“The proposed Northern line extension would bring huge benefits for local communities along the route,” said Michèle Dix, Managing Director of Planning for LU.
“We are keen that local residents and businesses read the leaflet that is soon to appear through their door. This will update them on how the latest plans for the Northern line extension are progressing.”
The extension could be operational by 2019 subject to funding and permission from the Secretary of State for Transport for permission for TfL to build and operate it.
