TfL expenses to be routinely published after claims for mugs and magazines

Expenses claims by senior managers at Transport for London are to be published online from April.

Last month we revealed that senior TfL managers had charged Londoners thousands of pounds in expenses, including claiming £2.40 for hotel internet access, magazine subscriptions, coffee mugs and meals.

Between 2010 and September 2012 the seven most senior executives claimed more than £22,000.

In the most recent year for which figures are available, transport Commissioner Sire Peter Hendy claimed more than £2,500 on taxis.

By comparison Mayor Boris Johnson has claimed just 107.19 in taxis in the current financial year.

IN January TfL defended the sums claimed by Sir Peter, insisting he “travels to and from work by public transport and he also regularly uses public transport when travelling in the capital on business.”

A spokesman added: “He is overseeing the delivery of a ten-year multi-billion pound budget to manage transport in London, and also deliver Crossrail and the upgrade of the Tube and there are occasions when his full schedule and late hours necessitate the use of taxis (which, of course, TfL licenses).”

Unlike the Mayor and London Assembly Members, TfL bosses aren’t currently required to publish details of their expenses claims online.

However the Mayor says this will change when the body begins its new accounting year.

In a written answer to Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon, Mr Johnson said: “The expenses claimed by TfL Chief Officers are currently made available on request, but will be published routinely on the TfL website from April 2013.”
