Standards Board Start Investigation into ‘Nazi’ Jibes

February 21, 2005 by Staff

The Standards Board for England has started their investigation into allegations that the Mayor of London has breached the Greater London Authority’s Code of Conduct. The complaint against Mayor Livingstone is that he:

  • Failed to treat others with respect
  • Brought the office or the authority into disrepute

The allegation was made by a member of the public and follows the row between Mayor Livingstone and an Evening Standard reporter.

Brian Coleman, Chairman of the London Assembly, said: “One week after the London Assembly gave the Mayor the opportunity to apologise for his comments made to an Evening Standard journalist, the matter is now to be investigated by the Standards Board. I shall have to report this matter and the recent letter from the Commission for Racial Equality to fellow Members on the London Assembly on Wednesday when the Mayor will appear before us again. It is extremely disappointing that this matter has dominated London politics for such a long period. The Mayor could have brought this to a close last Monday”
