Southwark Council Respond to Waste Claims

November 22, 2006 by Staff

Southwark Council have denied recent claims that their new PFI waste management contract could lead to the Borough’s waste being incinerated.

Phil Davies, Southwark Council’s head of waste management and transport, said: “At the heart of the counci;’s waste management strategy is the desire to embrace new technologies for the sustainable management of the borough’s waste.”

“Meeting recycling targets in excess of the Mayor’s own strategy are central to our long-term objectives which will be delivered through our proposed new contract.

Mr Davies also insisted that “all documentation associated with the PFI has been shared with the GLA who have confirmed that the council’s approach is in general conformity with the Mayor of London’s Municipal Waste Management Strategy.”

“We are therefore very surprised by the Mayor’s recent comments which we believe misrepresent the current position in Southwark.”
