Heavy snow across London has forced Transport for London to cancel all bus services across the capital.
Shortly after 00.40 a message was posted on the TfL Live travel news website announcing the withdrawal of all London buses “due to adverse weather and dangerous road conditions.”
The Met Office has predicted London will see up to 6in of snow overnight ans is warning of severe weather for much of the country UK over the coming days.
In a statement released on Monday morning, TfL says bus services “will only resume when road conditions allow.”
“The vast majority of London’s bus services operate along local authority maintained roads which have been particularly affected by the heavy snowfall. We aim to restore services as soon as possible once roads have been treated and it is safe to do so.”
Tube services are operating and London Underground say they are seeking to run as many trains as possible but warn that some lines are likely to be disrupted.
Although DLR and London Overground services are in operation, TfL warns these too could be subject to disruption and all Tramlink services are currently suspended.
A spokesperson for Transport for London said: “Heavy snowfall across the London area last night has severely disrupted transport services and further snow is forecast throughout Monday. The advice is to check before you travel, expect disruption and if your journey is neccesary then allow more time for your journey.
“The biggest difficulty today is the road conditions which are extremely dangerous and drivers should take extreme care.
“Bus services were suspended throughout London last night on the grounds of passenger safety due to the unsafe road conditions resulting in a large number of traffic incidents across London. Services remain suspended but we aim to restore services as soon as possible once roads have been treated and it is safe to recommence services.
“Gritters were out across the TfL road network throughout yesterday and last night to ensure that carriageways were kept as clear as possible in what can only be described as extremely challenging conditions. Gritters will remain out on the TfL road network throughout the course of today.”
Separately the Met Police has said the force “is maintaining its policing services across London”. A Met spokesperson said “There are no reported issues with staffing levels. We have well versed contingency plans which can be put in place should the need arise.”
In a statement issued at 10.30am Monday, TfL announced that services had resumed “on a small number of bus routes including routes 16, 36, and 73 in central London”.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has also announced that the congestion charge would be suspended for the day.
