Sadiq Khan takes second place in new YouGov poll

January 29, 2015 by Martin Hoscik

cityhall_chamber_2_900Labour’s shadow London minister, Sadiq Khan, has overtaken rivals David Lammy and Diane Abbott to become party members’ second choice as Mayor.

A new YouGov poll for the Evening Standard shows that Dame Tessa Jowell remains the top pick of members (26%) and Londoners (28%) but other previously high-polling runners have lost ground.

Kahn’s surge comes despite repeated denials that he’s running and claims that he’s content to serve as a minster in Ed Miliband’s government should the party win the General Election in May.

Third place in the new poll went to Barking and Dagenham MP Margaret Hodge who now has the backing of 16% of party members.

Ms Abbott’s support fell from 20 per cent at the end of last year to 12 per cent while Mr Lammy’s backing fell from 17 per cent to 14 per cent.

Amongst all Londoners Mr Khan came second, Ms Hodge third and Ms Abbott fourth.
