Thousands rail passengers had to be evacuated from stranded trains after a power cut brought chaos to services running through Clapham Junction.

The electrical problem struck between Wandsworth Common and Clapham Junction earlier this morning, forcing Gatwick Express to cancel all services and badly affecting Southern trains routes and disrupting services in and out of Victoria station.

Police and other emergency services were needed to help passengers, some of who were stranded for five hours, evacuate their trains.

According to a London Fire Brigade spokesman, around 2,000 passengers needed assistance.

Network Rail has advised passengers to avoid avoid travelling through Clapham Junction “which is very busy” and is likely to see continued disruption for the rest of the day.
