Cable broadband and TV company Virgin media will eventually provide WiFi access at 120 stations, with 80 due to be connected in time for the Olympic games.
The service will cease to be free later this year after which passengers wishing to connect will need to pay Virgin, either on a Pay-As-You-Go basis or as part of a subscription to the company’s services.
The company will also provide internet-connected portals offering commuters up to date travel information, these will remain free.
Announcing the deal with Virgin Media, Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “Millions of passengers will now be able to connect to their work, friends or access the latest news and travel information whilst on the move.
“This is a fabulous new and free resource which will be in place from this summer when London is being showcased on a global stage and playing host to millions.”
Virgin CEO Neil Berkett said the company were “delighted to be launching Wi-Fi for free throughout summer 2012.”
