New Mayoral council to promote London

June 12, 2009 by Staff

cityhall_closeA new council established by London Mayor Boris Johnson is to oversee the “the future promotion and rebranding” of the capital.

The Promote London Council, which met at City Hall for the first time yesterday, will focus on attracting new visitors and business to the capital. It will also advise the Mayor on promoting sectors of the economy where he currently has no involvement, such as health and design.

Speaking yesterday Mr Johnson said: “In just three years time, the eyes of the world will turn to London as we host the greatest sporting event in the world and it’s appropriate that we brand ourselves accordingly.

This is a huge task but one that we must start shaping immediately. The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games provide a once-in-a-generation promotional opportunity for the capital, with potential global audiences of half the planet’s population. With the Promote London Council in place I am confident that we’re now in a stronger position to showcase the capital’s fantastic array of artistic, cultural and sporting assets.”
