New Commission to Monitor 2012 Sustainability

January 23, 2007 by Staff

A new body has been set up to independently monitor and verify London’s 2012 pledge to host the most sustainable Games ever.

The Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 is the first body of its type set up in association with any Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and will be responsible for assuring sustainability across the delivery, staging and legacy of the London 2012 Games programme.

Shaun McCarthy has been appointed Chair of the Commission which has been jointly funded by the Greater London Authority family, the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, the Olympic Delivery Authority and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Mr McCarthy said his body would “require the Olympic bodies to demonstrate they have robust plans in place to meet their sustainability commitments” and vowed to “challenge the 2012 programme to create a legacy of which future generations can be proud.”

The process for recruiting commissioners is expected to commence shortly.
