Mitcham fire station plans welcomed

March 6, 2009 - Martin Hoscik@MayorWatch

Council bosses in Merton have welcomed plans to build a new, enlarged fire station in Mitcham.

The council says an application by the London Fire Brigade  for Outline Planning Permission follows “months of close collaboration” with the Fire Brigade and London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) Chairman Brian Coleman.

The existing station is both listed and located in a Conservation Area, making it difficult to increase services. A new location has been identified at at 421 – 445 London Road.

Councillor David Williams, Leader of Merton Council said: “this is good news for Mitcham. It is generally accepted that the existing fire station is too small and not fully suitable for modern use by the local fire brigade. A brand new, enlarged fire station on the Funnels Removals site would better cater for the needs of a 21st century fire service as well as enhancing the appearance of the local area.”
