Councils should “combat the myths and misunderstandings” surrounding the allocation of council housing according to Housing Minister John Healey.
Healey made the comments as he published new statutory guidance which gives councils greater flexibility in how they manage their waiting lists and sets out the principle that those in greatest housing need must be given priority in allocation systems.
The Minister said local people “must be given confidence that council homes in their area are allocated fairly” and said council chiefs “must make sure people can see more clearly how homes are being allocated in their area.”
Today’s guidance, which can be read here, places a new responsibility on councils to consult with local residents on any changes to allocation policies and ensure local people are better informed about who is getting housing.
