Mayor’s Crossrail fares pledge welcomed

July 24, 2013 by Martin Hoscik

crossrailroundelA commitment by Mayor Boris Johnson that Crossrail fares will be in line with those charged on the London Underground and DLR has been welcomed by Labour London Assembly Member John Biggs.

Mr Biggs table tabled a written question at the recent session of Mayor’s Question Time on behalf of constituents who travel to and from Maryland, Forest Gate, Manor Park and Chadwell.

In response the Mayor confirmed he would have responsibility for setting fares on all Crossrail services.

He told Mr Biggs: “I intend that such fares will be in line with those charged on LU/DLR, and that the full ticketing range including Oyster Cards, Travelcards, Freedom Passes and Zip cards will be valid on Crossrail services.”

Responding to the Mayor’s answer, Mr Biggs said: “I am pleased that at a time of rising costs for travellers, the Mayor has pledged to set them in line with other TfL fares and that all current travel cards will be valid for travel on Crossrail.”

However he called on Mr Johnson to “listen to Londoners, many of whom are struggling with a cost of living crisis, and abandon his above inflation fare rise planned for January.”
