May 17, 2006 - Staff

Plans were announced today for the fourth London Mela event, the UK’s largest celebration of Asian Culture. Highlights will include Pakistani rock stars, Bollywood inspired salsa dance, pyrotechnics and fountains plus six stages of music, comedy and dance.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone said “the London Mela is now firmly established as one of the capital’s major cultural events.” adding that “over 75,000 people enjoyed last year’s festival”

Describing the scale of the event Ajay Chhabra, London Mela Artistic Director said “If you put all the arts centres, clubs and theatres of London together for a day, you’ll get the London Mela.”

According to the 2001 census more than one in eight Londoners, 13.2% of the population, are Asian.

The London Mela will take place in Gunnersbury Park, Popes Lane; W3 on Sunday 13 August 2006 from 12 noon until 9.30pm. The outdoor festival is supported by the Mayor of London and produced by Ealing Council in partnership with Hounslow Council.
