Mayor Sets Out Case for Greater Powers

February 16, 2006 by Staff

Ken Livingstone has submitted his response to the ODPM’s consultation paper on the powers and responsibilities of the Mayor and Assembly.

The response outlines the detailed case for how London and Londoners would benefit from providing the office of Mayor with the right set of powers to tackle the problems the city faces.

Speaking as he submitted his response on Tuesday the Mayor said his “highest priority is ensuring all London’s residents can share in the city’s prosperity by equipping them with the skills they need to fill the coming job opportunities as London continues to prosper.”

“The prohibitive cost of housing in London is a huge burden not just on ordinary Londoners trying to find decent, reasonably priced, accommodation, but on the future prosperity of the city as a whole. That is why I am calling for control over the city’s affordable housing investment, together with additional powers to speed up the planning system in London. This will provide a better fit with my London Plan and ensure that more housing stock, meeting the needs of Londoners, becomes available.”

The Mayor’s submission can be downloaded from the media section of the GLA website.
