Mayor and Assembly Clash Over Nuclear Energy

June 16, 2006 by Staff

Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and the London Assembly have clashed over the role of nuclear energy in solving the UK’s energy shortages.

Yesterday the London Assembly on a motion to say that nuclear power should not be ruled out as part of the government’s review of energy policy.

However the Mayor has attacked the move saying the Assembly’s view “shows how out of touch they are with Londoners” adding that “fortunately their decision does not affect the anti-nuclear policy of the Greater London Authority which is determined solely by the Mayor.”

The Mayor pointed to a MORI poll which showed “over two thirds of Londoners opposed to the transport of nuclear waste in the city and nearly three quarters opposed to building nuclear power stations anywhere near them.”
