The upgrade of the Jubilee Line may not be completed by end of the year according to London Underground bosses who claim Tube Lines, the PPP contractor recently bought out by Transport for London, was “well behind schedule” despite giving assurances that they would complete the work on time.
The warning to passengers came as London Underground set out a schedule of line closures which they say will allow the work to be completed “as quickly as possible”.
LU say “little progress” has been made on works to the north of the line, necessitating a series of weekend closures. There will also be some closures on other parts of the line where work is more advanced.
London Underground Managing Director Mike Brown said it was “now clear that we inherited from Tube Lines a Jubilee line upgrade programme which was badly behind schedule.”
Brown said he wanted to “apologise to passengers, communities, and businesses who have suffered years of closures”, adding: “although there is only a slim chance of completion by the end of the year, we are doing everything possible to get the job done as soon as possible, whilst keeping disruption to an absolute minimum.”
However despite LU’s promise to minimising disruption for passengers, the entire line will be closed for one weekend in October and November. In addition, both the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines will be closed on 27th and 28th December.
Caroline Pidgeon, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the London Assembly, said the announcement was “grim news for all the Jubilee Line passengers who have suffered so much disruption over months and years.”
Pidgeon added: “The upgrade of the Jubilee Line is demonstrating exactly how not to upgrade the tube. There is now overwhelming evidence that blockades of short sections of the tube for two or three weeks would be a far better way to upgrade the tube than the fiasco of literally years and years of weekend closures.”
