London joins UK in rejecting AV

Londoners have overwhelmingly rejected the proposal to change the way MPs are elected with 60.47% voting against the adoption of AV and 39.53% voting in favour.

Votes in the referendum were counted on a borough basis which were then combined to produce a result for the entire London region.

The total number of votes cast in London was 1,862,468. The number of votes cast in favour of YES was 734,427 against 1,123,480 NO votes.

A total of 4,561 ballot papers were rejected and turn out was 35.4%.

Five of the capital’s 33 local boroughs – Camden, Islington, Haringey, Lambeth, Hackney and Southwark – voted in favour of the change.

Across the UK the final result was 32.1% in favour of adopting AV and 67.9% against.
