Ken Livingstone has welcomed the latest Metropolitan Police crime figures which show between April 2006- March 2007 there were 62,000 fewer offences than for the same period the previous year.
There were 921,779 crimes for the period, the lowest number since 1998/99.Overall there has been a 6.3 per cent cut in crime across London. The numbers of gun-enabled crime, violent crime, burglary, sexual offences and hate crimes are all down.
Mr Livingstone said the fall was “beyond expectations” adding that this “is the fourth consecutive year that we have seen crime fall in the city.”
Citing his policies on crime as a catalyst for the fall the Mayor said the capital had “turned the corner after decades of falling police numbers. The Met now has record numbers of police, and a full-strength police team in every single neighbourhood.”
“A neighbourhood police team out on the streets in every part of London is the level of protections and reassurance that our communities demanded and needed.”
Commenting in the wake of recent high profile murders Mr Livingstone stated “every single death is one too many, which is why we will continue to fight to make our street and communities safe for all.”
