London colleges receive long-term jobless cash

May 13, 2009 - Staff

The Government has announced that fourteen London colleges are to receive extra funding to train those who have been unemployed for more than six months.

The funding, announced today by Skills Secretary John Denham, forms part of a national package to create 75,000 training places. Ministers say those unemployed for six months or more find it harder to re-enter the workplace.

Denham said: “In these tough times we must do all we can to help people back into work and prepare for the upturn when it comes. We know that people whose skills are most up to date find it easier to find a job, and businesses with well-trained staff are better placed to survive the recession and take advantage of new opportunities.”

The fourteen London colleges are:
Waltham Forest College
Barnet College
Barking College
Havering College
Stanmore College
Uxbridge College
Harrow College
College of North West London
Tower Hamlets College
Kensington and Chelsea College
Carshalton College
Kingston College
Richmond Adult and Community College
Greenwich College
