City Hall Greens have called for a fares debate “based upon facts” following publication of figures showing the average fare increases since 2005.
The figures, provided to London Assembly Member Darren Johnson by Mayor Boris Johnson, show average bus fares rose by 23% between 2005 and 2008 and 32% between 2009 and 2012.
Tube fares rose by 17% and 32% in the same periods.
Commenting on the figures, Darren Johnson said: “I think it is really important that we have a debate about fare increases which is based upon facts, rather than the selective slicing of statistics for particular years.
“The tables produced by the Mayor in response to my question will hopefully become the reference point for future debates. It is clear that fares have gone up faster than inflation under both administrations, but the increase is significantly higher under this Mayor.
“I hope that we can get away from an unproductive debate about whose fare rise was bigger in the past, and focus upon whether future fare rises are justified, or desirable.”
