Livingstone Calls for Middle East Ceasefire

July 24, 2006 by Staff

London Mayor Ken Livingstone added his support to calls for an “immediate ceasefire” in the Middle East.

In a statement issued today Mr Livingstone said “Londoners have been appalled by the killings, maimings, destruction of infrastructure and displacement of hundreds of thousands of people in the conflict which has broken out in the Middle East.”

The Mayor also cautioned that “the longer this conflict is allowed to continue the greater the destruction on the ground and the wider damage, including to London, as a result of economic dislocation, reduced tourism, worsened community relations and the threat of terrorist attacks.”

Livingstone claimed “London has a direct interest in seeing the devastation in the Middle East halted without delay” adding that he joined with “the great majority of the international community in calling for an immediate ceasefire.”
