Former independent mayoral hopeful Siobhan Benita has been chosen as the Liberal Democrats’ candidate for the 2020 election.

Benita, who came fifth in 2012, said she hoped to “show the Lib Dems can offer a fresh alternative to London’s tired two party politics”.

She will campaign alongside Caroline Pidgeon, currently the party’s sole member of the London Assembly, who heads the party’s 14-strong list of candidates for the body.

Pidgeon commented: “I am delighted to be leading our strong and diverse team of candidates for the London Assembly elections in 2020. Our candidates from across the capital are grassroots campaigners, truly connected to London’s communities.

“We look forward to supporting Siobhan Benita and ensuring the Liberal Democrats secure more votes, more seats and more say in London”.

Party leader Vince Cable said: “Led by Siobhan Benita as Mayoral candidate, Liberal Democrats will offer a strong voice for London, demanding better transport, housing and air quality.

“Our support in the capital is growing once again, as Londoners see the Lib Dems as the only party seriously standing up for them on Brexit.

“Caroline Pidgeon has demonstrated that Lib Dems punch above their weight on the London Assembly.

“I’m confident that 2020 will see us grow our team there to become the strongest and most diverse ever.”
