LibDems Select Tuffrey as Group Leader

May 10, 2006 by Staff

The Liberal Democrats on the London Assembly have chosen Environment Spokesman Mike Tuffrey as their new group leader.

Mr Tuffrey, who replaces Lord Graham Tope, said party “are often said to punch above their weight….this is an important time for Londoners with a Labour government that has lost its way and a Labour Mayor who is increasingly arrogant and out of touch.”

“I will put the issues that really matter to London at the heart of my leadership: reducing crime and the fear of crime, better investment in a sustainable public transport and pushing for more affordable housing”

Meanwhile Mayor Livingstone has attacked the LibDems for backing the election of Brian Coleman as the new Chair of the London Assembly earlier today.

Mr Livingstone said the “Lib Dems are a disgrace to their party – they were given the chance today by Labour and the Greens to vote for a Green candidate to chair the Assembly but instead they voted for a right-wing Tory.

I don’t believe that people who voted Lib Dem, wanted them to form an alliance with the Tories and to instal a rightwing Tory chair of the London Assembly who will oppose my policies.”
