LibDems Announce Mayoral Shortlist

September 10, 2007 - Staff

The Liberal Democrats this morning announced a shortlist of three names to go forward to ballot or party members to decide their candidate for London Mayor in next year’s GLA elections.

Liberal Democrat members in London will vote on the candidates next month, with the successful Mayoral candidate being announced in early November.

The shortlisted candidates are:

Chamali Fernando, a barrister from Finchley. If elected Mayor, Chamali says she’ll “put forward the issues, ask tough questions, campaign across London and present Liberal Democracy as the tonic for Londoners from all walks of life”

Fiyaz Mughal, Chief Executive of Enfield Citizens Advice Bureau and a councillor in Haringey. Mughal promises to “reduce and devolve urban planning powers to local authorities, push for further integration schemes for migrant communities and develop transparent recruiting procedures for Mayoral advisers.”

Brian Paddick, former Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and Visiting Fellow of Ashridge Business School. If elected Mayor Mr Paddick will “introduce a series of radical and innovative policies that will help all Londoners to feel part of, and to be proud of, their capital city.”

Unlike the Conservative’s hustings which start today the LibDem events will be closed to non-members with one taking place at the party’s autumn conference. The second takes place in October and will see the Mayoral hopefuls share the platform with European Parliamentary candidates.

Liberal Democrat Chair of Campaigns, Edward Davey MP said his party was putting forward “an excellent shortlist of high calibre candidates that will both give London Liberal Democrat members a real choice and the people of the capital a great Mayor.”
