May 7, 2004 by Staff

Liberal Democrat Mayoral hopeful Simon Hughes has launched the policies he hopes will carry him to City Hall. Speaking today Hughes said: “Londoners need an independent mayor who will fight for London at home and abroad, and will make London united.”

“I want an easier, safer and more united London. My vision is nothing less than a Greater London, the most exciting place in Europe and the world, where we are united in tackling crime, terrorism and improving transport.”

“We must make this great capital city into our community, our town and our kind of place again. That is what I pledge to do, and that is my campaign is all about.”

Key LibDem polcies include:

1. pedestrianise Oxford Street

2. give each neighbourhood 8 dedicated uniformed police officers by 2008

3. give Londoners 5 free trips into the congestion charge zone
