Liberal Democrat Assembly Members Graham Tope and Sally Hamwee have vowed to play “a full part” in future debates of the new Greater London Authority Bill when it reaches the House of Lords.
The pair, who are also LibDem Peers, say they “broadly welcome extensions of the Mayor’s powers where they are taken from central government” but warn against “sweeping up what are now borough responsibilities.”
In an email sent to party members and supporters Baroness Hamwee says “it will not be easy to focus on the office of Mayor rather than the current office-holder…but that will be essential if we are to seek the best balance in terms of democracy and accountability.”
