Lib Dems announce Mayoral hopeful shortlist

July 12, 2011 by Martin Hoscik

Mike Tuffrey hopes to take on Ken and Boris in next year's Mayoral contest
Londoners will have to wait until early September to find out the name of the Liberal Democrat’s 2012 candidate for Mayor of London after the party announced a revised selection timetable.

The candidate, who will be chosen by a ballot of party members in London, was originally due to be announced on August 12th.

However the results of the contest will not now be known until September 2nd.

The revised schedule was announced as the party confirmed the names of those seeking the nomination.

Former Haringey Councillor Brian Haley joins defeated MP and reality TV star Lembit Opik, former Met Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner and 2008 candidate Brian Paddick and outgoing London Assembly Member Mike Tuffrey on the list of Mayoral hopefuls.

Tuffrey, backed by the LibDem’s 2000 candidate Baroness Susan Kramer, and a majority of 2012 London Assembly candidates is widely expected to secure the nomination.

The revised timetable is as follows:

July 18: Postal ballot sent to members in London

July 27: London all-member hustings
August 31: Deadline for returning ballot papers

September 2: Count and declaration of result
