A new YouGov poll for LBC has given Labour’s Sadiq Khan a 10 point lead over Tory rival Zac Goldsmith in the race to succeed Boris Johnson as London Mayor.

Asked who they’d vote for if the election were held tomorrow, 45% name Tooting MP Khan, 35% Goldmsith, 6% UKIP’s Peter Whittle, 5% Green party candidate Sian Berry and 4% Liberal Democrat Caroline Pidgeon.

The election’s rules require a second round of voting if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote on the first round.

When presented with a choice of just Khan and Goldsmith, the candidates most likely to top the first round, Khan is the choice of 55% of poll respondents with just 45% naming Goldsmith.

While Labour’s candidate has unveiled a raft of policies on housing and fares, Mr Goldsmith’s campaign has so far focused on his lobbying over police funding and success in securing an amendment to the Government’s Housing Bill.

Today’s poll suggests that Mr Khan’s pledge-based campaign is the one connecting with voters.

A win at this May’s election would be a personal triumph for Mr Khan who has already defied expectations by overtaking the more widely known Tessa Jowell to secure the Labour nomination, and would boost party leader Jeremy Corbyn.
