Labour Councils Back Greater Planning Powers for Mayor

December 11, 2006 by Staff

Lewisham’s Mayor Steve Bullock has written to MPs expressing his support for government proposals to grant the Mayor of London more say over planning decisions in the capital.

In addition to being Mayor of Lewisham Bullock is the Labour leader in London Councils, the body which represents London’s boroughs where he represents the nine Labour controlled councils in London.

In his letter to MPs, Steve Bullock says that “any new powers will only be used to address issues of real importance to all Londoners, such as providing more affordable housing or ensuring important waste recycling facilities are delivered.”

The move was welcomed by Mayor of London Ken Livingstone who said there had been “an attempt to portray the government’s plans to tidy up the planning process in London as a ‘power grab’ at the expense of London’s councils” adding that “Steve Bullock’s letter to MPs highlights how inaccurate some of the scaremongering has been.”
