Infographic – London in numbers

October 17, 2013 by Martin Hoscik

The Office for National Statistics has released a series of infographics to help promote its latest Region and Country Profiles report.

While we Londoners occupy just 1% of the UK’s landmass (1,600 square kilometres), we account for 13% of its population and produce 22% of its economic output.

And our environment is perhaps a little better than we’re sometimes told – we produced 4.9 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per resident in 2011, the lowest of all the English regions.

Traffic on major roads decreased by 8.6% between 2002 and 2012 – the larger of only two decreases across all regions.

But it’s not all good news – we have the highest number of crimes in England and the average home costs almost double than outside the capital – £425,000 compared with £242,000 for the UK.
