The Greater London Authority Bill pass its second reading in the Commons last night.
MPs passed the bill, which will see increased powers for the Mayor of London and a greater scrutiny role for the London Assembly, by 169 votes.
Welcoming the passing of the Bill Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said the vote was “good news for Londoners and is a vital step towards tidying up planning and housing powers and ensuring further devolution from Whitehall to London government.”
The Mayor claimed that MPs who opposed the Bill tonight “are out of step with Londoners and are in effect blocking more affordable homes for Londoners.”
