June 14, 2004 - Staff

Nicky Gavron has been appointed as London’s Deputy Mayor following last Thursday’s elections. Ms Gavron previously held the post during Mayor Livingstone’s first term in office.

Nicky Gavron, Labour Assembly Member and Deputy Mayor of London.

As Deputy Mayor Ms Gavron will be involved in advising the Mayor on strategic planning decisions as well in the development and implementation of the mayor’s environmental policies, including the establishment of a Climate Change Agency for the capital, focusing primarily on CO2 emissions and energy policy. The Deputy Mayor also sits on the Metropolitan Police Authority.

Announcing the appointment Ken Livingstone said “I am pleased that I will have a Labour deputy mayor for the full four year term. Nicky Gavron was an important part of my last administration. She will continue to play a lead role supporting me on strategic planning and her additional responsibilities for this second term in helping me develop policies on the environment and families are a reflection of Nicky’s commitment to London.”

Ms Gavron said she was “delighted” at her appointment adding that she and the Mayor have agreed “I shall focus on two major challenges, making London the green capital of Europe and turning it into a more child-friendly city.”
