3,500 armed forces veterans have taken up Boris Johnson’s Veterans Pass scheme which entitles them to free travel in London, almost 1,000 more than were expected to benefit from the scheme.
The prospect of concessionary fares for veterans was first raised by Johnson during last year’s election campaign and quickly attracted widespread support.
Figures provided by the Mayor in response to questions from London Assembly Member Mike Tuffrey show that since the scheme came into operation last November, around 3,500 veterans have been issued concessionary passes, 900 more than were originally expected to benefit from the scheme.
Official figures suggest the passes save holders around £200 a year at an annual cost to Transport for London of £700,000.
