Former Mayoral Hopeful is new LibDem President

September 2, 2004 by Staff

Former London Mayoral Candidate and Southwark MP Simon Hughes has been elected as the new Liberal Democrat President.

Mr Hughes, who came third in the Mayoral election, polled 71% of the vote in the poll of party members beating his rival Lembit Opik MP. The LibDem president is primarily a campaigning role and tradtionally the post holder sits in the shadow cabinet.

Speaking after the result Mr Hughes said: “It is an honour, privilege and pleasure to be elected as party President.”

LibDem leader Charles Kennedy welcomed the outcome of the summer long poll saying he looked “forward to working with Simon and continuing the progress Liberal Democrats are making in British politics”
