Fares Abolished For Under-18 Students

May 9, 2006 by Staff

Ken Livingstone today announced that he abolish bus and tram fares for under-18s in full time education from September this year.

The scheme is designed to promote the benefits of public transport to school leavers whilst helping young people continue studies and improve employment prospects.

Announcing the scheme Mr Livingstone said the scheme is “a cost-saving measure for thousands of London families that continues our policy of promoting public transport wherever possible which also helps protect our environment.”

The Mayor said he had given the go-ahead this week to ensure “that this policy can be delivered in time for the new academic year.”

“Nearly 130,000 16 and 17 year olds in London can benefit from this policy”

Those wishing to benefit from the scheme will need to apply for a 16/17 year old Oyster photocard.
