Council Officers Destroy 4 Skips of Booze

June 17, 2008 by Staff

Councillor officers in Haringey destroyed thousands of bottles and cans of confiscated alcoholic drinks last week as the borough highlighted efforts to clamp down on retailers selling alcohol illegally.

Destroying the illegal alcohol took an entire day and the cans and bottled filled more than four skips when it was transported to storm drains in the borough. Officers poured the drink onto storm drains as these do not go into main sewerage system.

Haringey Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said the Borough was determined to “send out a clear message to those who sell alcohol without a licence or sell counterfeit alcohol that if they are caught we will destroy their goods and take legal action against them.”

“We provide licenses to individuals who fulfil certain, strict criteria, that way we can control the activities of licensed premises, prevent anti-social behaviour and things like underage drinking.”
