Blears Attacks Tory Mayoral Delay

August 5, 2006 by Staff

Labour Party Chairman Hazel Blears yesterday mocked the Conservative’s decision to extend the deadline for applications in the race to become the party’s Mayoral candidate.

Ms Blears claimed the selection of candidates putting themselves forward meant that “instead of finding the next big thing, the Conservatives have reverted to the same old thing”.

Dismissing the current contenders Blears described them as “the usual line-up of failed Parliamentary candidates, old-fashioned Thatcherites and even a candidate who wants to abolish the Mayor altogether.”

Lauding the man her own party attempted to prevent becoming Mayor in 2000 Ms Blears said “Ken Livingstone will continue to deliver for Londoners across the city, to prepare for the 2012 Olympics and to provide the policies and results on the ground that people want to see.”
