Barclaycard Visa Joins Oyster

December 14, 2006 by Staff

Londoners could soon be able to pay for fares and make contact-free cashless payments from a single card.

The news follows an agreement between Barclaycard and Transys, the consortium behind the Oyster smartcard system, to develop a new card containing both Oyster and Barclaycard Visa.

The deal, which was approved by Transport for London, gives Barclaycard exclusive rights to place Oyster on their Visa and Visa Connect cards for the next three years.

Announcing the deal Mayor of Ken Livingstone said it would “make Oyster even more convenient.”

In addition to the standard Chip and PIN credit card facility and Oyster technology the cards will include a new Visa ‘wave and pay’ technology for contactless payments up to the value of £10.
