The London Assembly is to hold a public meeting next week as part of a review into Mayor Boris Johnson’s progress in delivering current housing targets in the face of government funding cuts and changes.
Next Tuesday’s meeting will see AMs question a number of experts as part of their investigation. A second meeting will be held on 5 April after which the the Assembly will seek to feed its findings into the Mayor’s revised housing strategy.
Chair of the Planning and Housing Committee, Nicky Gavron AM, said: “In a time of upheaval and change in housing and welfare policy, the Mayor will find it more challenging than ever to meet the unrelenting need for low-cost housing in London, particularly for rent.
“We want to identify the implications of the challenges the Mayor is facing, and where he can most effectively target his efforts in order to protect and provide affordable housing for Londoners.”
Last week the Assembly published a report calling on the Mayor to switch focus from the number of new homes built to the number of new bedrooms provided. AMs said the Mayor should “measure his success on the number of people taken out of housing need.”
