Assembly: Pay Pensioners London Weighting

February 9, 2006 by Staff

Londoners on state pensions should receive London Weighting according to Members of the London Assembly.

Responding to consultation on the Mayor’s Draft Older People’s Strategy, Assembly Members have praised the Mayor’s commitment to reducing pensioner poverty. However they also urged Mr Livingstone to lobby government for a pension system which includes an additional ‘London Weighting’ element.

The Mayor’s strategy highlights his view that there should be a more generous and comprehensive state pension based on earnings as well as contributions but AMs believe that pensioners and those on fixed incomes are disproportionately affected by the high cost of living in the capital and call for more imaginative ways of tackling this injustice.

Joanne McCartney AM, who led the investigation said: “This strategy is an excellent start but we would like the Mayor to go even further by ensuring it has realistic goals that are easily measured. If we get this right, London can lead the nation in its treatment of older people.”
