Arts Council post to be re-advertised

October 26, 2009 - Staff

Boris Johnson is to re-run the selection process for a new London Chair at the Arts Council after his appointment of former-Evening Standard editor Veronica Wadley was blocked by Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw.

The announcement, made in a letter to Bradshaw, marks a change of tact by the Mayor after he previously threat to leave the position vacant.

Earlier this month the Mayor was accused of “cronyism” after it emegered he nominated Wadley despite reservations from members of the selection panel.

Johnson’s letter (download a copy here) re-iterates his stance that Wadley was the best person for the job and accuses Bradshaw of taking “a narrow and party political approach” to the appointment.
