Art Auction Raises £230k for Livingstone Campaign

March 7, 2008 - Staff

An art auction to raise funds for Ken Livingstone’s election campaign raised over £230,000 organisers have announced.

Artists including Banksy, Billy Childish, Catherine Yass and Marc Quinn have all donated works for the auction which took place last night.

A spokesman for Mr Livingstone’s campaign said “London is one of the the most culturally dynamic and attractive cities in the entire world.

Tonight’s auction showed that many of the city’s foremost artists are committed to keeping it that way by contributing their work to help re-elect Ken Livingstone Mayor of London.”

“The fact that the auction raised just over £230,000 is a tribute to the excellence and global appeal of London’s artists.”

Livingstone said he was “standing for re-election to maintain London’s openness and tolerance and the cultural and creative world leadership which goes with those virtues. I am grateful that some of the most talented artists in the world have given their support to my election, through contributing their works, tonight.”
