Anti-Gun Campaigner Backs Johnson

May 14, 2004 by Staff

Charles Bailey, founder of the Don’t Shoot Campaign has announced his support for the Greens after they announced their gun policies for London.

Mr Bailey told MayorWatch: “I am voting Green because the Greens take seriously the issue of gun crime on our streets. I am really pleased the London Greens have joined up with the Don’t Shoot campaign and are putting forward policies that would really stop the incidence of gun crime on London’s streets.”

Darren Johnson, Green Party Mayoral Candidate today welcomed the new report from the Government designed to crackdown on gun crime.

Johnson said, “However it does not go far enough. Replica guns must be banned and we must get guns off the streets in London. I can think of no good reasons why anyone in London should want a gun unless they are a member of a shooting club. I would extend the firearms amnesty for the first six months of my mayoralty and then encourage the courts to take a very hard line with anyone found possessing an illegal gun or ammunition.”

Mr Johnson criticised the policy of rival candidates Steve Norris and Simon Hughes saying “The answer is not to arm more police in London. It is to ensure that there are no illegal weapons in London by cutting off the supply of firearms. We must improve witness protection in order that people are happy to come forward and report illegal possession of guns in London.”
